Learn To Swim Programme

We pride ourselves on offering the highest standard of swimming lessons and are committed to ensuring all children/young people have the opportunity to learn to swim in a safe and inclusive environment.

Active Halton are proud to be partnered with Swim England, to deliver the Swim England ‘Learn to Swim’ programme – the leading national teaching syllabus for safe, inclusive and effective swimming lessons for all ages.

Developed by swimming experts, created with professional swimming teachers and coaches, the programme engages and motivates learners of every age and ability, with a comprehensive range of badges and awards, helping to build confidence and competence in the water.

From building water confidence, to stroke development and personal survival, the Active Halton ‘Learn to Swim’ programme has something for everyone.

Pre-school swimming lessons, for children aged 3 years and over, are a great way to introduce your little one to the world of swimming and to build the beginnings of a lifelong love of water. We focus on creating a positive and fun environment, helping to build confidence and teach the core skills needed to learn the four strokes.

  • In-water support from an experienced swimming instructor
  • Maximum 4 swimmers per class
  • Available to swimmers aged 3 years +
  • Swim England Pre-School Framework Awards

The Swim England ‘Learn to Swim’ Framework is suitable for children/young people aged 4 years and over. The Learn to Swim Framework takes a games-led approach to teaching, developing confident and competent swimmers through fun and enjoyment. The ‘Learn to Swim’ programme is divided into progressive stages (stages 1-7), which make up the core national syllabus of learning to swim for primary school aged children. The Stage 1-7 Awards are designed to reward your child for their development of the essential aquatic skills they need to be confident, competent and safe in the water. Each of the Learn to Swim Stage 1-7 Awards has a list of clear outcomes that need to be completed in order to reach the next stage.

  • Experienced SEQ (Swim England Qualified) Swimming Instructors
  • Available to swimmers aged 4 years +
  • Swim England Stage 1-7 Awards
  • 30 minute lessons (Monday-Saturday)
  • Supports children/young people in developing the skills and motivation required to lead a healthy and active lifestyle

Swim Academy is for swimmers who have completed stage 7 of the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework. Swim Academy is part of the Active Halton aquatic skills pathway, enabling swimmers to progress from the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework to Aquatic Skills Framework. This framework is all about extending the skills and abilities of young swimmers who would like to do more than swim. The Learn to Swim Stages 8-10 Awards offered as part of Swim Academy focus on the discipline of competitive swimming, developing skills such as competitive starts/turns, fitness and training for competition.

  • Experienced SEQ (Swim England Qualified) Swimming Instructors
  • Available to swimmers who have completed stage 7 of the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework
  • Learn to Swim Stages 8-10 Awards
  • 1 hour session

The Rookie Lifeguard programme, in partnership with the Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS) UK, gives children/young people the skills they need to be confident in the pool or the sea – offering peace of mind for parent/carers. Built into the programme are lessons in valuable survival, rescue and sports skills, all delivered in an exciting way that will get children involved and motivated. The programme is suitable for children aged 8 years and over who have completed either stage 6 or stage 7 of the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework. The programme can therefore run parallel to your child’s current swimming lessons and will enhance the skills they learn in the pool.

How to Join?

Please note, we do not operate a waiting list system. Spaces are offered on a first come first served basis. We will only ask you to complete an application pack if we have a day/time suitable for you. A member of the reception team will let you know what days/times are currently available. A space cannot be reserved/held until all paperwork is completed in full and handed in at reception.

If your child is aged 3-4 years old and is yet to start school, please collect an application pack (application form/direct debit form) from the reception desk. If your child is 4 years old and has started school, we recommend booking a space on a stage 1 class (see below). If you are unsure as to whether this class will be suitable, please contact the Swimming Coordinator.

If your child is aged 4 years and over and a non-swimmer (unable to swim 5 meters independently without the use of flotation equipment on their front and back), then please collect an application pack (application form/direct debit form) from the reception desk.

If your child has prior swimming experience, is confident with water on the face/over the head and is able to travel 5 meters or more without support or the use of flotation equipment, then we ask that they attend a swimming assessment prior to booking. Following an assessment with an experienced Swimming Instructor, we can advise on what stage/ability your child is working at and enroll them on the appropriate stage. To book your FREE space, please call either Kingsway Leisure Centre (0151 495 2200) or Brookvale Recreation Centre (01928 712 051).

If your child has completed Stage 7 of the Swim England Learn to Swim Framework (or equivalent) elsewhere and is looking to join Swim Academy and/or Rookie Lifeguard, please contact reception and ask to speak to the Swimming Coordinator.

  • Swimming lessons are paid for via monthly Direct Debit. The cost is £21.20 per month (30 minute lesson) / £28.00 per month (60 minute lesson).
  • An initial pro-rata payment will be required to cover the period between your first lessons and initial Direct Debit payment.
  • The Active Halton ‘Learn to Swim’ programme runs continually over the course of year, with a break over Christmas. Swimming lessons do not take place on Bank Holidays. Your direct debit amount will be amended.
  • Customers can cancel their membership at any time. However please note all cancellations must be submitted in writing and before the 15th of the month to be cancelled in time for the following month.
  • We ask that parent/carers inform the team of any medical and/or health issues/disabilities that may affect the child’s ability in the water at the time of booking. If you would like to discuss how we can best support your child in accessing swimming lessons, please contact the Swimming Coordinator.
  • Children over the age of 8 are required to use their own sex changing rooms. Alternatively, we have family changing facilities available. Children under the age of 8 cannot be left unattended in the building.
  • We ask that girls wear a one piece swim costume and boys wear swim shorts that do not pass the knee. This is to ensure your child’s swim costume does not hinder their swimming. Long hair should be tied back and jewellery is not permitted.
  • All equipment (e.g. flotation equipment) is provided by the leisure centre.
  • Swimmers must not enter poolside and/or the designated pick up/collection area prior to the lesson time.
  • Included as part of your membership is access to the Home Portal, which allows you to track your child’s progress. The details you need to sign in to your online account will be provided following confirmation of booking.
  • All children/young people are regularly assessed in accordance with the ‘Active Halton Expected Standards’, which sit parallel with the standards set out by the National Governing Body (Swim England). Children/young people will progress at different rates. Moving a child/young person to the next stage before they are ready and/or have completed the outcomes to the standard required will not benefit swimmers and may affect their confidence and safety, as well as the effective delivery of lessons. If you have questions about a child’s progress, please contact the Swimming Coordinator.

Thank you to parent/carers for adhering to the COVID secure policies & procedures in place on our ‘Learn to Swim’ programme, which have helped ensure the safety of both customers and staff. We understand things have been a little different and at times challenging, but your ongoing cooperation has enabled the children on our programme to get back in the pool and learn an essential life skill.

We are pleased to inform you that from Monday 6th September, the changing rooms will be open to all ‘Learn to Swim’ customers. Parent/carers will no longer be required to sit in the gymnasium, instead we ask all customers to enter/exit the building via the normal route (being sure to follow the one-way system on site). Parent/carers are free to spectate from the fitness studio window (if available), whilst seating will be available in the main reception. We ask customers to avoid standing in the stairwells wherever possible.

Customer and staff safety is the top priority to ensure your leisure centres and all the activities that take part in them are COVID-19 safe and secure. You can be assured that Government, leisure industry, and sports-specific guidance is being followed. Please ensure you follow all guidance and information displayed on site, which includes following the one-way system, washing your hands regularly and/or using the hand sanitising stations provided. We ask that you do not enter the leisure centre if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms.

The following measures will remain in place for the ‘Learn to Swim’ programme:

  • We encourage all swimmers to arrive ‘beach ready’, to minimise the time spent in the changing rooms and ask that you change and exit as quickly as possible.
  • Swimming Instructors will continue to wear a face covering at the start and end of each lesson.
  • The changing rooms will continue to be cleaned/sanitised on a regular basis.

A polite reminder to all customers that parent/carers must remain on site for the duration of their child’s swimming lesson, as per our safeguarding policy.

Thank you again for your cooperation and if you have any questions or concerns, please call Brookvale Recreation Centre on 01928 712051.

Frequently asked questions…

Who can spectate?

1 adult and 1 child (under the age of 16) can accompany a swimmer. All spectators must remain in their seat and children must be supervised at all times. Please note – only 1 seat is available per spectator ‘group’ (in the case of accompanying children).

What if my child needs the toilet?

Please encourage your child to use the toilet before their swimming lesson. If your child does need the toilet, the Swimming Instructor will radio the Leisure Attendant on duty, who will then notify the parent/carer in the gymnasium.

What if I have two children in back to back lessons?

All swimmers (with their parent/carer) will wait in the allocated waiting area of the first lesson. After the first lesson ends and the child returns to the gymnasium, the other child will be escorted to poolside by the Swimming Instructor (as per normal procedure). Once the child’s whose lesson has just finished is dry, please move over to the opposite waiting area.

What if I have two children with a lesson at the same time?

All swimmers (with their parent/carer) will wait in the allocated waiting area for that lesson time. The Swimming Instructor(s) will enter the gymnasium at the lesson start time and escort both children to/from poolside (as per normal procedure).

What if we arrive late?

Please try to avoid arriving late wherever possible, however if you do arrive late, please enter your allocated entrance door/waiting area and the Leisure Attendant on duty will radio a member of staff to escort the child to poolside.

If you have any further questions,

please call Brookvale Recreation Centre on 01928 712 051.
